If you're in a rut trying to land a spot in your specialty I'd suggest looking at positions you could parley your specialty into. Marginally related expertise is better than no expertise. This is true for employers but recruiters just don't seem to get that.
Keep an open mind and oppurtunity will present itself.
And no, I'm not suggesting you blow money on a fly by night stock..

Regarding the last comment from Anonomous, thanks for the advice. I graduated in December with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, and I was working on my PhD, but I ran out of funding. I'm doing all that I can to avoid working for a corporation, but it is difficult. My work is in power systems, and I am applying for a lot of jobs with cities who own their own electric utility.
If anyone had any suggestions or ideas about where to look, I would be glad to hear it.
